3D printers are a reality, you can easily buy one with no such giant investments. 3D printers reflects the trend do it by yourself, where people don't just buy things, but create new tools and solutions to the daily tasks. Other example is the labs open to the public, where they can use tools as 3D printeres, laser cutters, like "De Waag Society" in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
